Senuti is the only alternative that will give you the power and convenience that you need, wrapped in an interface that is extremely easy to use, at a cost that you can’t complain about. There are many good reasons that someone would have to transfer music from her iPod back to her computer.

Senuti is a simple Mac OS X application for transferring songs from your iPod back to your computer. Recent changes have converted Senuti to 64-bit and added support for the latest iPods.

Unfortunately, Senuti is no longer a free app–it was for years during an extended beta–but if you’re looking for a stable, reliable way to get music from your iPod onto your computer, Senuti is one of your best options. If you take a few minutes to read the short “QuickStart” guide and FAQ, you’ll save yourself time and avoid trouble (like creating duplicate tracks or inadvertently letting iTunes erase your iPod). Senuti uses a very simple interface, with good documentation and several step-by-step movies available online. This cleverly named utility (you’ll figure it out) essentially does what iTunes does but backwards, acting as an “iPod ripper” that lets you move your music, playlists, videos, everything, onto your Mac. If you want to get music from your iPod onto your computer (say, if you had a hard-drive failure, or you just bought a new Mac), you either need the know-how to use Terminal or you need an app like Senuti. ITunes makes it really easy to put music from your computer onto your iPod–unfortunately, the reverse is not true. So…here’s what I used to re-capture our iPod libraries…

So when it came time to update our two iPods (shuffle & touch), iTunes wouldn’t recognize them since they belonged “to another library” (since dead). With it, I lost an iPhoto calendar I was making for my entire family, photos as gifts, and a few CD’s I downloaded for my wife. So a week before Christmas, my good ‘ol PowerPC dual 1.8 mac tower finally died on my (logic board and not worth replacing).
